Introvert Whisperer / Getting Ahead in Your Career is More Straightforward than You Think - Introvert Whisperer Getting Ahead in Your Career is More Straightforward than You Think Dorothy March 4, 2016 Career Development, Promotion One response Through the years, I was often asked about what I did that made me get promoted so consistently and as a manager what my expectations were of my employees.  Many times, these people seemed to be struggling to perform on the job or minimally weren’t moving up the ladder for pay or position.  The struggle they seemed to have was more a mental mindset than actual skill or talent. I have discovered that success on the job involves two simple, yet sometimes elusive concepts.  The first concept is about delivering performance that exceeds expectation.  The second concept is performing beyond the description of the job or adding value.  You may be sitting there thinking “hey, I don’t get paid enough to do all of that”, well if you are thinking something like that, may I point out that you’ve already set yourself up to remain exactly where you are. Let’s look at the first concept: Exceed performance expectations.   When you first start a job, of course, you have interviewed and have an idea of what your job involves.  You are now on the job and some type of training has taken place so you can perform the job.  The amount of stimulation you get when first starting a new job can be overwhelming, but at some point, you arrive at a point where you are fairly independently performing the job.  It is at this point, where you need to take a step back and fully understand the nature of the business you are in and where your job plays a role.  You are part of an organic machine.  Without you, the machine would either stop functioning or it won’t work as intended.   This is where you must understand what your management expects from you, so some research is appropriate.  If there are other people who perform the same job and seem to do it well, interview them and ask them what they think excellence is and how they achieve it.  Talk to people upstream and downstream from you.  By this I mean there are most likely people who do work that comes to you so you, in turn, perform work that goes to others.  When you talk to these people, ask them what they provide or need you to provide along with questions about, when, how often, in what form and with what qualities.  Once you think you have done your homework, time to talk to the boss.  Roll up your findings into something you can jointly review.  Ask them to validate what you have developed and modify or add anything that needs to based on the fact that it’s that person who will be assessing your performance.  Once you are clear, your final questions should be:  How will you know if I am p erforming? What criteria will you use? In other words, you now know what the expectations of the job are and how to perform it, but what will the process be for finding out how well you did? This may seem like overkill but it’s not.  The majority of people in the workplace seem to amble in and out of jobs, never really connecting to the fact that THEY are responsible for their own success.  Like a map and itinerary on a vacation, you have to know where you’re going, so you know what you have to do to get there. There is one other thing you need to do.  If your place of business doesn’t have a formal performance appraisal process you will need to devise a way to obtain feedback on your performance.  Even if your place of business does have a process, you may want to conduct your own process for obtaining input on how you are doing, not just from the boss but those people you work closely with.  I have seen people doing fine between appraisal periods and then suddenly run themselves off the road.  Don’t wait a full year to find out that fact.  Also, make sure you are not just conducting a love-in with your work friends, you need honest, objective input on how well you do your job and what would improve it. The second concept I mentioned: Add value.     When a person is doing their job well, the way to a boss’s heart is to go beyond the job description.  Adding value is where you perform work that is either not being done or not being done well or consistently but will advance the mission of your business.  There is usually a ton of these kinds of opportunities; you simply need to look for them.  As you gain experience, you will notice them all the time.  I had a job in a fabric store and as with all retail stores; there are times of boredom due to customer lulls.  It was during those times, that I tidied up the bolts of cloth, made sure there were no loose ends on the trims, dusted and cleaned.  It might not have been part of the job description, but it made a big difference to the owner.   A pearl of wisdom on when to add value.  Only pursue adding value when you know you are consistently performing your job well.  Don’t drop the ball, take on valued added tasks AND continue to perform your job. There is nothing more irritating than to have some cowboy going off doing a bunch of things that are “nice” but not doing their job.  Also, make sure you aren’t pursuing your own agenda or fun thing.  I’ve had people go off to add value and what they were doing, missed the target.  It had no value. There is another subtle aspect to adding value.  It demonstrates a level of thought and initiative that is hard for bosses to “train in” to a person.  You either have it or you don’t.  If given the task of laying off a person and the choice is between two people that absolutely perform their job, the boss is going to look at the person that brings more to the party than just doing the job.  They will look at the value adding an employee as someone who is committed to the business success, someone they can trust and someone that can grow.  That is job success. Well, we obviously had no hesitation in asking him up to the front and away he went, as pretty as a bell and sang his way all through the chorus. Now, the other children there probably had no idea of this little boy’s past shyness but it genuinely was a time when Lydia and I took stock. We love our parties and we always stand by our continuously proven philosophy that music unlocks the soul. Any inhibitions he might have had before were left outside, thank you very much! We were graced with his adorable grin till the end of the party. All I had to worry about was trying to stop Lydia from crying with joy. Well, perhaps both of us.” Lydia and Matthew met quite by chance one year at the International Edinburgh Fringe Festival where they were both on the famous Royal Mile promoting their respective shows. Lydia was performing in a short musical that eventually won Best New Musical at the Fringe called ‘Ed’ and Matthew was performing with his University sketch group, the Durham Review, which went on to win best student comedy! They realised they were both about to enroll at The Royal Academy of Music for their Post Graduate Diploma and the rest is Musical Adventurist history! After training at the Royal Academy, Lydia and Matthew set out into the London musical theatre scene. But they both felt that they had more to give, besides acting, particularly to children. Lydia had done a Music degree at Trinity College in Greenwich and Matthew had achieved a degree in Music at Durham.  After almost a year of work-shopping various ideas, they came up with 'The Musical Adventurists' music parties for children and haven’t turned back since! They are extremely nice, extremely silly, love working with children and have a strong desire to stand out from the crowd. College Admissions Essay Crunch Time College Admissions Essay: The Time is Now                                                             Its that time of year when students have to hand in their college admissions essay. For students whose SAT or ACT scores are a little bit on the low side or for students whose GPA is lower than they would like, its extra important to have a fabulous essay. So what is it that makes an essay well above average? One â€" The essay should be incredibly unique. It must be unique in content but also in writing style. Many students have similar life experiences at age 16 and 17. However, students can put a unique and original spin on their particular struggles, volunteer experience, or personal outlook on life. Students should also show originality and writing style. If it appears that the essay has an overly rigid structure it will appear less interesting to the reader. Two â€" The essay should have absolutely no errors. It is especially important for an admissions essay to have appropriate structure, proper grammar, and absolutely no spelling or punctuation errors. Student writers should have multiple people proofread their essay or hire a professional proofreader who can catch any and all errors as well as provide appropriate suggestions for structural improvements our Irvine English tutors would be more than glad to read it. Three â€" The essay should be about you as a person. College admissions departments do not want to admit students who are all exactly the same. US colleges and universities like to have diversity on campus and so its important that the internal “you” can shine through your essay. If theres something unique about your personality or what you would like to do with your life or something that you have a particular passion for, its important to mention that in the essay (READ: College Application Crunch Time). What to Do Now So what do you do now that your college applications, including your admissions essay, are due less than a month from today? Here is a last minute timeline that you can follow to allow yourself the best chance at success as a student writer. One â€" Start writing right now. If, for some reason, you have not yet started writing the first draft of your essay now is the time to get started. Seriously, stop reading this blog, sit down at your computer and start typing. There is not much time left but there is still enough time for a dedicated student to finish a first and second draft and to arrange for a proofreader. Two â€" Polish up the content. If you have already written a rough draft for your essay now is the time to pull it out of your binder, backpack, or the drawer that you stuffed it in and take a second look. Read through it and see whats working and whats not. Grab two different color highlighters and highlight the things that are really great and the things that you would like to keep, and then highlight the things that need improvement (READ: 7 Best Essay Contests). Ask a parent, a trusted and dedicated friend, or a tutor to take a look at your essay. Ask them to give you absolutely honest feedback. What do they like about it and what dont they like about it? Then go ahead and write your second draft. Remember to do all of your content edits before you start your grammar edits, otherwise you may find that youre simply correcting things over and over again when it wasnt really necessary to do so. Three â€" Polish up the structure. If you feel that your structure is rigid or if you dont have any transition sentences, arrange to sit down with a tutor for an hour or two and get it polished up. If it is an option, hire a proofreader to go through and give you suggestions. It may take a couple of proofreads because you may need to send it back for a final edit after you fix the first set of corrections and suggestions. The college admissions essay is incredibly important and should not be overlooked and it is especially important for students who have lower SAT scores or a lower GPA. A fabulously written essay can often take a student’s application from the ‘maybe’ pile to the ‘yes’ pile in the college admissions department. For students who would like to attend a small liberal arts college, keep in mind that the essay is given a heavier weight on acceptance than at larger universities. Jack of all trades master of none! Jack of all trades master of none! Most parents would have used this phrase on their kids. How difficult do parents find it to get their kids hooked on to an extracurricular activity and then have them to master it. Children these days have a very short span of attention and easily get distracted, they quickly tend to get bored and want to shift or even sometimes quit these classes. As parents how would one tackle this issue? To start with listen to what your child thinks about his after school classes. Are complains like the classes are boring, teachers are strict, I am not interested in the class or simply none of my friends do this? Once you have heard them out the next step should be to interact with the other kids and their parents who take the same classes. Understand the teaching style and enroll the teacher in to help motivate your kid. Leverage on the Buddy system: Try to find friends who are taking the same instrument, and with the help of the teacher get line up your kid with a few of the fellow students who are motivated and doing well. Introduce a little friendly competition (No harm trying it!). Get involved in a positive way by listening to your child’s experience the class and make positive observation which in turn should encourage them. Always help them recognize that they will soon enjoy all the reward for the efforts and time they put in.
